INSIDE CHINA BASIN: George Kontos Debuts As Regular Analyst Before Home Opener

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 12th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Former Giants reliever George Kontos won two World Series rings with San Francisco. Now he’s an analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area and he will  help us dissect the Giants on a regular basis this season. Our first 2021 podcast took place on Thursday before the Giants home opener against the Rockies.

We discussed the rotation being the strength of the team so far and how a manager like Gabe Kapler should decide when to take a starter out of the game: “My view is, every game should be viewed as an individual variable. You have to watch the game and you have to see how the flow of the game is going and you have to see the contact and how hitters are reacting to the pitcher’s offerings and if the guy is cruising, the numbers in the third time in the order don’t really mean much to me.”

Catch It: 5 Seasons Of Cherished Memories With Joe Altobelli In Rochester, New York

BALL, GLOVEWelcome to CATCH IT! — Joe Castellano’s personal observations about what’s going on in the world of sports outside of The Sports Virus Podcasts

Today the baseball world lost a great man when former World Series winning manager Joe Altobelli passed away at the age of 88.

I had the privilege of spending five seasons working alongside Joe in the radio booth covering the Rochester Red Wings (1998-2002). He was a kind soul with an easy going personality. Everyone loved Alto.

Every night he had great baseball stories to tell, whether it be from winning the 1983 Series with the Baltimore Orioles or from his days managing the San Francisco Giants. I loved to reminisce about my hometown Giants with Joe, asking him what it was like to manage Jack Clark (my favorite player when I was in high school) or about his memories of Mike Ivie’s grand slam against the Dodgers in 1978. He had the Giants in first place for a while that season.

He always told Cal Ripken stories and was proud of playing him every inning of every game during his record playing streak.

Joe could also tell stories about his playing days (I can still hear him describing how he broke his toe nail every season with a foul ball and it would grow back by Christmas) and about the legendary teams he managed in Rochester in the 1970’s. He made Rochester his home and eventually became known as “Mr. Baseball” in Rochester.

He was so passionate about teaching the game. Another source of pride for him was when (as a Cubs coach) he helped develop Mark Grace from an average defensive first baseman to a gold glover.

I learned so much about the game of baseball from Joe. From how a manager should run a pitching staff, to defensive positioning, to lineup strategies, I had a lesson every broadcast and I was soaking it up. Sometimes he would just ask a question like “Would you send the runners here?” That would turn into another teaching moment for me and the listeners.

He was also an expert on how to deal with being in AAA when a Major League career might seem like a pipe dream for a player or even a broadcaster. “Don’t wish your life away” was his mantra. I never forgot that because even though one might wish for the future, the present is what’s important.

It’s a bummer that the Red Wings didn’t win another title with Alto in that booth. We won the Governor’s Cup in 1997, the year before he started broadcasting with me. Then the team fell flat in the years when we were together. But, that doesn’t diminish the joy we had and the cherished memories I have of that special time in my life.

Thanks Joe and rest in peace.

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Ray Woodson Assesses Giants Playoff Push, Risky MLB NLCS/WS Fan Plans

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Former KNBR talk show host Ray Woodson joins Inside China Basin to give his thoughts on the Giants outlook for the post season with six games to go in the regular season. We also discuss MLB’s plans to have fans in the stands at the NLCS and World Series.

Woodson on Giants pitching during the final playoff push: “They’re going to have to cobble it all together with the bullpen because it really is all hands on deck now. You’re going to have to manage like it’s a playoff game and I think you’ll see that reflected in how Gabe Kapler gives starting pitchers a much shorter leash.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Mariners TV Voice Dave Sims on Smoke and Smoak, Seaver and Brock

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Seattle Mariners television play-by-play announcer Dave Sims joins Inside China Basin to talk about the mid-week series against the Giants which was moved from Seattle to San Francisco due to unhealthy air quality in the Pacific Northwest. He gives tells us a bit about new Giant and former Mariner Justin Smoak and reminisces about Hall of Famers Tom Seaver and Lou Brock who recently passed away.

Sims on new Giants acquisition Justin Smoak who played for the Mariners 2010-2014: “For a big man he’s got good hands and good feet around first base…His deal is power. He’s going to swing and miss and he’s not going to hit for much of an average (career .229 batting average), but he can run into some fastballs.”

Woodson on Joey Bart: “There’s no doubt that when he makes contact that it is loud contact to all fields. He’s got impressive power…It’s just going to take some time. He’s a smart player. He’s definitely coachable. You’ve got to have him go out there and learn the hard way.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: SJ Giants Announcer Joe Ritzo On Joey Bart, Logan Webb, Hunter Pence

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

The Voice of the San Jose Giants Joe Ritzo joins Inside China Basin to discuss the promotion of rookie catcher Joey Bart and chat about Logan Webb’s development, the emergence of Austin Slater as an offensive force and the Giants designating Hunter Pence for assignment. Joe also describes his MLB debut emotions from 2019 when he was called on to do four games on the radio for San Francisco.

Ritzo on Joey Bart: “He is a very special talent and that was very obvious from the first week of last season when he was with us in San Jose. All the different ways that he can impact a game. I love watching him hit because a lot of his power can go out to center and right. It’s power to all fields which isn’t very common for such a young hitter. He can also make an impact defensively.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Tyler Heineman, From UCLA Walk-On To Giants Starting Catcher

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Giants catcher Tyler Heineman has embraced his underdog role. He went from being a walk-on at UCLA to starting catcher in the Major Leagues after Buster Posey opted out of the season. Heineman tells the Inside China Basin podcast about playing during the pandemic and his goals as a player. He also addresses the three catcher’s interference calls that have gone against him.

Heineman on his journey to the Major Leagues: “You’re in control your  own destiny if you really feel like you deserve it and you’re willing to put in the work. There’s going to be ups and downs. There’s a down for me right now, I’m not hitting the ball very hard. Instead of focusing on what I haven’t done in the past 20-something at bats, it’s what can I do starting from today on.”

On the three catcher’s interference calls that have gone against him: “It’s me being aware of who’s hitting and being aware of my stance and my distance from the beginning and knowing that I am going to be able to get to the pitch at the bottom of the zone and still frame it for a strike without being super turned and close to the hitter.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Shawn Estes On Gabe Kapler, SF Defense, Lineup & Career Memories

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Former Giants LHP and current NBC Sports Bay Area analyst Shawn Estes joins us to discuss manager Gabe Kapler’s head scratching moves, try to figure out why the defense has been failing and examine the slow starts for veteran hitters. Also, we go down memory lane and hear some entertaining stories about Shawn’s career.

Estes on Kapler pulling Kevin Gausman in the 7th inning on Sunday in LA with 80 pitches thrown: “You’re going to get more long term out of a pitcher like Gausman by allowing him to get through and battle through situations like that…Dusty Baker was really good at allowing his starting pitchers to work through some trouble, see what they’re made of mentally…If you’re not put in adverse situations then you never know what you can get out of that guy. I thought he pulled the plug way too soon in that situation.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: George Kontos On Opening Series/Gabe Kapler’s Pitching Management

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Former Giants reliever George Kontos won two World Series rings with San Francisco, now he’s an analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area. On Monday he told us about his decision to retire and he reacted to the MLB coronavirus news, which led to two games being postponed.

We discussed the opening four games for the Giants in Los Angeles and how manager Gabe Kapler handled the pitching staff: “In these situations now where it’s kind of all hands on deck at any point in time, everyone doesn’t know what to expect quite yet…In order to give your pitchers the best chance to succeed, they have to have confidence going into these situations knowing their job and what’s expected of them…(Having a defined role in the bullpen) in my opinion is the best way that guys who are routine oriented like relievers are, function at their highest level.”

Kontos on Shaun Anderson: “He’s got a demeanor and a kind of presence on the mound that is a little bit for me Hunter Strickland like…You can see once he hones it in a little bit more, he’s already nasty, but he’s going to be really, really good. He’s not afraid and does not shy away from any situation.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Bob Nightengale/USA Today: Gabe Kapler is “Perfect” for SF

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale joins the Inside China Basin podcast to share his reaction to Giants manager Gabe Kapler and some players kneeling during the national anthem before the exhibition game Monday against the A’s. As we approach the regular season opener Thursday, he gives his thoughts on the Giants chances in a short season without All Star catcher Buster Posey.

Nightengale on new manager Gabe Kapler, who made headlines on Monday when he knelt during the national anthem: “I think he’s the perfect manager for a city like San Francisco. A very liberal guy. Very wide open. Introspective. I’m not sure Gabe Kapler could have (knelt during the national anthem) in Philadelphia to tell you the truth. I’m not sure the fans would have gone for that, but I think in the Bay Area, perfect.”

Bob on the Giants chances to contend in a 60-game season: “It’s going to be a fun team to watch…I think the Giants could surprise people. The fact they have these veterans and everything else. I like the veteran teams rather than the young teams in a situation like this.”
