Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast
Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!
The Voice of the San Jose Giants Joe Ritzo joins Inside China Basin to discuss the promotion of rookie catcher Joey Bart and chat about Logan Webb’s development, the emergence of Austin Slater as an offensive force and the Giants designating Hunter Pence for assignment. Joe also describes his MLB debut emotions from 2019 when he was called on to do four games on the radio for San Francisco.
Ritzo on Joey Bart: “He is a very special talent and that was very obvious from the first week of last season when he was with us in San Jose. All the different ways that he can impact a game. I love watching him hit because a lot of his power can go out to center and right. It’s power to all fields which isn’t very common for such a young hitter. He can also make an impact defensively.”

NBC Sports Bay Area Emmy Award winning reporter Amy Gutierrez joins the Inside China Basin podcast to talk about the San Francisco Giants and Major League Baseball returning during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Amy G is heading into her 13th season covering San Francisco Giants games. This season, of course, will be very different than the previous 12. We chat about adjustments that will be made by players and the NBC crew as they try to stay safe during Covid-19. We also get her thoughts on new manager Gabe Kapler and get to hear about her favorite moments at the ballpark.
Amy G on the decision to play baseball during a pandemic:
“Is it worth it? If one person got it and died from it, was it worth it to play the baseball season? That’s an extremely hard question to answer because, of course not, and then you deal with this need to get back to normalcy and people have to do their jobs and support their families. So, it’s a really difficult question to pose and to try and answer.”

USA Today baseball writer Jorge Ortiz joined us from San Francisco. In part 1 of our conversation he chats with us about Jarrett Parker and the outfield situation as well as Pablo Sandoval.
Ortiz talked to The Sports Virus about Pablo Sandoval: “…(Bruce) Bochy said that he thinks his swing is really close. If they can get a semblance of the old Pablo they’re in a no lose situation with him because for one they wouldn’t mind giving Christian Arroyo more time to develop in the minors particularly since so much of this has been a wasted season. You have a guy who’s lively, who maybe can still swing the bat well and who can buy you that time at third base so you don’t have to rush Christian Arroyo.”
Come back FRIDAY for Part 2 of our conversation with Jorge Ortiz.

We talk about the Giants bullpen and the return of Hunter Pence as our regular guest SF Chronicle Columnist John Shea joins us in part 2 of our conversation.
The Sports Virus talked to Shea about Jake Peavy moving to the bullpen:
… “You have to acknowledge he did it without a fight. On the other hand, is he suitable for that? I don’t know. (Barry) Zito wasn’t. (Tim) Hudson wasn’t. A lot of these guys at the end of the line are moved to the bullpen and everyone expects them to be in their prime again, like (Tim) Lincecum in 2012, just a super-duper reliever. It’s not that easy. It’s a whole different rhythm, a whole different timetable. You never know when you’re going to get called to pitch in a game…It’s a completely different lifestyle.”
Come back MONDAY when Marlins broadcaster Glenn Geffner will join us from Miami.

Our special guests from AT&T Park in San Francisco are Giants CF Denard Span and KPIX Sports Director Dennis O’Donnell.
Span talked to The Sports Virus about new Hall of Famer Ken Griffey, Jr.:
… “He’s one of the reasons why I played this game. He’s influenced this game so much. I think you could go around every clubhouse in Major League Baseball and I guarantee you probably 95% of the guys would say he was their favorite player growing up. Salute to him. Unbelievable career.”
O’Donnell talked to The Sports Virus about Bruce Bochy:
… “I think Bochy has done one of his best managing jobs since being a Giants manager. If you look at the first half they compiled the best record in baseball really without 30% of their lineup. If you miss that much talent and you have the best record, at some point you’re going to hit the skids. The 1-7 (to start the second half) doesn’t surprise me. They’re not a 1-7 team but I think this kind of streak was inevitable given the fact that so much talent is sidelined.”
Come back WEDNESDAY when GIANTS RHP SERGIO ROMO is our guest.

Sacramento River Cats Play-By-Play announcer Johnny Doskow joined us Saturday to talk about the Giants Pacific Coast League affiliate.
Doskow was asked by The Sports Virus about Hunter Pence’s rehab assignment:
“ …There’s no reason to rush him. They are going to slow play it and I think it’s smart. You’d rather have a healthy Pence go in mid-August than rush him and have something else happen. Even watching him leg out a double, he’s obviously not 100 percent, but he’s gonna get there and I think the slower you play it the better.”

We talk about the second half of the season for the Giants as our regular guest SF Chronicle Columnist John Shea joins us from San Diego in part 2 of our conversation.
The Sports Virus talked to Shea about San Francisco bench players coming through this season:
… “When (Hunter) Pence was lost last year the Giants were done. It was over. They never recovered from that. This year they lose him and don’t miss a beat and just roll into the All Star break…I think (Bruce) Bochy has a lot to do with this. It’s one of his best managerial efforts.”
Come back MONDAY when JORGE ORTIZ from USA TODAY is our guest. Then on WEDNESDAY, we’re scheduled to chat with former Giants LHP Jeremy Affeldt.

San Francisco Chronicle Columnist John Shea joined us for our on site podcast from Keeble and Shuchat Photography in Palo Alto in Part 1 of our conversation.
Shea talked to The Sports Virus about the Giants superb infield defense: “… You talk about gold glovers. The only one with one is (Brandon) Crawford, but there’s gonna be more. I put down the computer (on a) ground ball. It’s a must watch because they’re turning double plays, it’s so swift, it’s clean and the essence of defense and glove work. It’s beautiful to watch right now.”
Come back FRIDAY for Part 2 of our conversation with John Shea.
