INSIDE CHINA BASIN: NBC’s Amy G On MLB Return Adjustments, Favorite Career Moments

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

NBC Sports Bay Area Emmy Award winning reporter Amy Gutierrez joins the Inside China Basin podcast to talk about the San Francisco Giants and Major League Baseball returning during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Amy G is heading into her 13th season covering San Francisco Giants games. This season, of course, will be very different than the previous 12. We chat about adjustments that will be made by players and the NBC crew as they try to stay safe during Covid-19. We also get her thoughts on new manager Gabe Kapler and get to hear about her favorite moments at the ballpark.

Amy G on the decision to play baseball during a pandemic:

“Is it worth it? If one person got it and died from it, was it worth it to play the baseball season? That’s an extremely hard question to answer because, of course not, and then you deal with this need to get back to normalcy and people have to do their jobs and support their families. So, it’s a really difficult question to pose and to try and answer.

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Pablo On His Pitching, Austin Getting Used To Seagulls, Welcome Back Will

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated twice a week on TheSportsVirus.com!

Tuesday at AT&T Park in San Francisco after batting practice, we chatted with Pablo Sandoval about being the new Giants secret weapon out of the bullpen. Plus we hear from Austin Jackson, who is getting along with the seagulls in centerfield and we chat with returning LHP Will Smith, who is set to come back from Tommy John surgery on Wednesday.

The Panda talked about his relief appearance on Saturday against the Dodgers: “I didn’t even know I had that curveball…I was excited because I see all my teammates in the dugout watching and laughing, it loosened them a little bit…we get in the clubhouse having fun talking about it.”

Scott Ostler: Giants “Magic Disappeared Like A Big Cloud That Just Got Blown Away”

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated 3 times a  week on TheSportsVirus.com!

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Scott Ostler has the solution to all of the woes for the Giants and Major League baseball! Just kidding. Actually, Scott does give us his takes on what the Giants might be thinking heading into the off-season and he tackles the MLB replay, pace of game issues.

Ostler talked to The Sports Virus about what happened to the Giants this season: …“There’s kind of a magic  that either happens or doesn’t happen. One year you’ve got Aubrey Huff as one of your team leaders. How bizarre is that? Nobody would ever figure that into any kind of equation. And yet it worked and it made the team better…It was a magical way that things fell together in each of those three (championship) years in a different way. This year that magic just disappeared. You can’t always put your finger on it. Sometimes it’s just like a big cloud that just got blown away.”

Jorge Ortiz: Panda “Can Buy You Time At 3B So You Don’t Have To Rush Christian Arroyo”

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated 3 times a  week on TheSportsVirus.com!

USA Today baseball writer Jorge Ortiz joined us from San Francisco. In part 1 of our conversation he chats with us about Jarrett Parker and the outfield situation as well as Pablo Sandoval.

Ortiz talked to The Sports Virus about Pablo Sandoval: “…(Bruce) Bochy said that he thinks his swing is really close. If they can get a semblance of the old Pablo they’re in a no lose situation with him because for one they wouldn’t mind giving Christian Arroyo more time to develop in the minors particularly since so much of this has been a wasted season. You have a guy who’s lively, who maybe can still swing the bat well and who can buy you that time at third base so you don’t have to rush Christian Arroyo.”

Stark, Part 2: Panda “Hasn’t Put Enough Into It Mentally & Physically To Be A Great Player”

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated 3 times a  week on TheSportsVirus.com!

National baseball writer Jayson Stark joined us earlier this week. In part two of our conversation we chatted about Pablo Sandoval’s tenure with the Red Sox. The Panda was eventually signed to a minor league contract by the Giants.

Before Pablo Sandoval signed back with the Giants, Stark talked to The Sports Virus about his future: “…He hasn’t done anything since the day he signed that contract (with Boston) that would make you think this guy is somebody who could help your team win…He (still) has that same Panda smile and love of baseball, love of being in the batter’s box that we used to see…I ran a list the other day of players in Red Sox history who wound up with a higher OPS than the Panda in his time in Boston. It was comical. Mike Benjamin and Bob Zupcic and names like that. If you saw Pablo Sandoval swing the bat as a Giant you would ask yourself, how could that be?…If you don’t do everything in your power mentally and physically to prepare you’re not going to be that guy. You just can’t show up in the batter’s box four times a night and think that’s enough. This guy hasn’t put enough into it mentally and physically to be a great player.”

Listen To Jayson Stark
