Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we go over the 5 turnovers San Francisco had in its disappointing loss to the Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.
Plus, our special guest this week is San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ann Killion. She examines the 49ers outlook and what they should do for a backup quarterback the rest of the season.
Killion talked about the depth and talent of the team: … “Yes, they lost (Jimmy) Garoppolo which is a huge blow. There’s no doubt. Not that they would have been contending for the playoffs really this year, but at least he would have gotten an entire year of playing in the system…I think what we’ve seen even before he got injured was that this team isn’t ready. There are holes all over the place. Yes, some of it right now is because of injuries, but also it’s because some of the players they are relying on are either injury-prone or old.”

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss injury risk vs. reward for QB CJ Beathard who took 8 QB hits in the loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
Bono talked about why quarterbacks are willing to take injury risks when it comes to a QB fighting for a first down: … “I’ve always said that we’re trained as quarterbacks, it’s always 3rd and 10 and you’ve got to get the first down. So, you’re going to do whatever it takes to get the first down, whether it’s running the ball, throwing the ball, throwing it with your left hand. That’s how we’re wired.”
49ers QB CJ Beathard will be back with us next week after the Arizona game. He’s going to be joining us on a regular basis this season.
Two weeks ago, CJ talked about being ready as Jimmy G’s backup: “…you have to prepare as if you are the guy because you’re a play away from being in there and getting all of the game reps…More than anything it’s watching film and staying in the film room. The quarterback position is more mental than anything else. The more film you get and watch on the defense, seeing what they do, when you get on the field it feels a lot better and more comfortable like you’ve seen it before.”

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss the consequences of Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending torn ACL injury and what can be anticipated from new starter CJ Beathard.
Bono talked about Jimmy G’s interception that was called back due to a Lions holding penalty: … “The goal is to come in and play and have it be as seamless as possible. Yes it’s CJ Beathard and not Jimmy Garoppolo, but CJ’s mind set needs to be, yeah I’m not the same person, I don’t have the exact same style, but how we move the ball and how we execute is exactly the same.”
49ers QB CJ Beathard will be back with us in a couple of weeks. He’s going to be joining us on a regular basis this season.

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we analyze the Lions win, which included some anxious moments in the 4th quarter when Detroit nearly came all the way back from a 17-point deficit.
Bono talked about Jimmy G’s interception that was called back due to a Lions holding penalty: …”Unfortunately, I’ve thrown that one too many times that go the other way. Everybody has. Jimmy G was going to throw it and he kind of gets bumped a little bit on his left side. Now, I’m not defending him throwing it because he shouldn’t have thrown it, but he doesn’t get a whole lot on it. He gets bumped a little bit on it and it looks like he can’t follow through on it.”

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we talk about the 49ers 25-23 last second win over the Titans at Levi’s Stadium. It’s the third straight win for SF with Jimmy Garoppolo as the starting QB.
Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.
Bono talked about the advantage of having Jimmy Garoppolo instead of a rookie QB: “The difference is that you have a guy that sat for three years behind one of the best (Tom Brady). He has been able to observe how he’s done it day in and day out, how to win games…If we had a first-round, first-pick rookie he wouldn’t have that experience. He’s three years up the learning curve and maybe even a little bit more because he’s seen one of the best do it.”
