INSIDE CHINA BASIN: George Kontos On Tauchman’s NYY/SFG Move, Buster & Longo Start

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 12th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

On this week’s Inside China Basin San Francisco Giants podcast former SF reliever George Kontos relates to Mike Tauchman making the move from the Yankees to the Giants since he was in the same situation in 2012. Also, we talk about Madison Bumgarner’s 7-inning no-hitter, pitchers hitting, why Buster Posey and Evan Longoria have been back to their old selves and freak injuries.

Kontos compares playing in New York to playing in San Francisco:“(In New York) you’re going to have 50 media members in the clubhouse that are going to micro-manage everything and give their opinions and judge and criticize. It takes a very mentally strong individual to have long term success playing for a New York market team…Coming out West and playing for the Giants you are already built up and you’ve been toughened by that market. When you come to the West Coast, everything is still talked about, it’s just not made such a buzz about and you’ve already hardened your emotions to it where you can just go out there and play and not care what the media says. It allows you to have a lot more success and be yourself.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: George Kontos On SF Rotation Success, Camilo Doval & Extra Innings Rule

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 12th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Former Giants reliever George Kontos won two World Series rings with San Francisco. Now he’s an analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area and he’s helping us dissect the Giants on a regular basis this season. Our second 2021 podcast took place on Tuesday following back-to-back shutouts in Miami and Philadelphia and a San Francisco studio stint for George.

Kontos discusses the hot start for the Giants rotation and cold start for the lineup. He tells Joe Castellano why he doesn’t like the extra innings rule, how he got the number 70 and who convinced him to grow his trademark beard. Plus, he analyzes rookie reliever Camilo Doval: “It’s been impressive how he’s come in and done his job and managed his emotions…His slider is very, very good. He throws it with the same intent and arm speed as his fastball, so out of the hand it looks just like a fastball which is why he’s getting some of those swings that the hitters look a little bad on.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: George Kontos Debuts As Regular Analyst Before Home Opener

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 12th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Former Giants reliever George Kontos won two World Series rings with San Francisco. Now he’s an analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area and he will  help us dissect the Giants on a regular basis this season. Our first 2021 podcast took place on Thursday before the Giants home opener against the Rockies.

We discussed the rotation being the strength of the team so far and how a manager like Gabe Kapler should decide when to take a starter out of the game: “My view is, every game should be viewed as an individual variable. You have to watch the game and you have to see how the flow of the game is going and you have to see the contact and how hitters are reacting to the pitcher’s offerings and if the guy is cruising, the numbers in the third time in the order don’t really mean much to me.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Ray Woodson Assesses Giants Playoff Push, Risky MLB NLCS/WS Fan Plans

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Former KNBR talk show host Ray Woodson joins Inside China Basin to give his thoughts on the Giants outlook for the post season with six games to go in the regular season. We also discuss MLB’s plans to have fans in the stands at the NLCS and World Series.

Woodson on Giants pitching during the final playoff push: “They’re going to have to cobble it all together with the bullpen because it really is all hands on deck now. You’re going to have to manage like it’s a playoff game and I think you’ll see that reflected in how Gabe Kapler gives starting pitchers a much shorter leash.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Mariners TV Voice Dave Sims on Smoke and Smoak, Seaver and Brock

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

Seattle Mariners television play-by-play announcer Dave Sims joins Inside China Basin to talk about the mid-week series against the Giants which was moved from Seattle to San Francisco due to unhealthy air quality in the Pacific Northwest. He gives tells us a bit about new Giant and former Mariner Justin Smoak and reminisces about Hall of Famers Tom Seaver and Lou Brock who recently passed away.

Sims on new Giants acquisition Justin Smoak who played for the Mariners 2010-2014: “For a big man he’s got good hands and good feet around first base…His deal is power. He’s going to swing and miss and he’s not going to hit for much of an average (career .229 batting average), but he can run into some fastballs.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: John Shea on Giants “Are You Kidding Me” Offensive Improvement

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated once a week and celebrating its 11th season on TheSportsVirus.com!

San Francisco Chronicle columnist John Shea joins the Inside China Basin podcast to analyze the Giants offensive prowess, scoring over 5 runs a game for the first time since the Barry Bonds/Jeff Kent era. Plus, we discuss the closer situation and tell some stories while reminiscing about Hall of Famers Tom Seaver and Lou Brock, who passed away this past week. Shea recently co-authored the book 24, Life Stories and Lessons from the Say Hey Kid with Willie Mays.

Shea on the Giants new-look offense: “Are you kidding me? What? This we have never seen. I guess we have to go back to the early 2000’s with (Barry) Bonds and (Jeff) Kent when they were scoring 5+ runs a game. But, now they’re doing it with guys that, well, they’re not Bonds and Kent…They’re scoring runs at a clip that nobody expected.”

Woodson on Joey Bart: “There’s no doubt that when he makes contact that it is loud contact to all fields. He’s got impressive power…It’s just going to take some time. He’s a smart player. He’s definitely coachable. You’ve got to have him go out there and learn the hard way.”
