Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Jimmy Garoppolo joining the 49ers: “All of a sudden he’s looking in the mirror like, now I’m the man, I’m the guy…I’ve been through it. (In Kansas City) Joe (Montana) had retired and I became the starter and I hadn’t thought about having the weight of that organization and that fan base and that city be on my shoulders and maybe I handled it wrong, that I was conscious of that. I never asked anybody and that’s probably my mistake.”

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Dwight Clark and “The Catch”: “When Joe (Montana) goes to the sideline and Bill (Walsh) tells him, ‘Remember, you’re going to have Freddie (Solomon) right away’ on the two-step out route. So, Joe comes out looking for him, but Freddie slips…If you watch Joe, he brings it back to throw it and doesn’t have it so he keeps going…Dwight’s route is exactly the way that Bill had always drawn it up. So, Dwight does exactly what he’s supposed to do.”

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the performance of rookie QB CJ Beathard, who made his debut in D.C.: “I think guys all of a sudden went ok, we’ve got a new quarterback in, he’s never played, we have to do our jobs better and I think that everybody did…He made some mistakes, but that’s gonna happen. They’re willing to live with that now is my guess. I don’t think Brian Hoyer will see the field again unless Beathard gets hurt. You’re playing for the future now.”

Bono On Wk 5 Hyde/Breida RB Shift: “I Don’t See Anything Wrong With Using Both Backs”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about RB Matt Breida getting more rushing attempts than Carlos Hyde in the Colts game: “I don’t see anything wrong with them using both backs. I think Carlos is doing fine, especially early in the season I thought he was running the ball well. They just seem to have gone away from running the ball…There’s just a bit of hesitancy there right now (with Hyde) and maybe the holes he’s just not seeing them well or they’re not there. Even though the Niners have been throwing the ball, it just seems like people are still stacking the box.”

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about QB Brian Hoyer and his receivers: “They’re not in sync…In the beginning I thought it was receivers getting manhandled and then there were a few drops and then I kinda thought Hoyer is not getting them the ball. His timing seemed a little off. In my mind I was thinking, ok he’s getting pressure. But, this weekend there were bad throws, there were bad routes, there were dropped balls. There’s no timing. There’s no rhythm to them.”

Steve Bono-Possible SF Week 4 Anthem Plan: “If They All Kneel, Eric Reid Is The Leader”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we talk about the 49ers loss to the Rams that dropped San Francisco’s record to 0-3. We also discuss the league-wide national anthem protests during week 3.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

BONO

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the NFL-wide national anthem protests during week 3. The kneeling all started last season with former Niners QB Colin Kaepernick being joined by S Eric Reid: “It seems to have come to be just about what are people going to do now during the national anthem? Why are we doing this? Why are we taking a knee? I like the fact that teams at least seemed to have talked about it…I don’t necessarily like that they’re kneeling down, that’s their prerogative, but I do like that teams agreed that this is what we’re going to do as a team. I would prefer that everybody stood for the national anthem and that they all stood there with arms locked. That’s great, that’s showing solidarity to me…It seems to me now that this would be something to do to make a statement, but what are we making a statement about?”

Bono made his opinion clear about Colin Kaepernick’s chances of returning to the NFL: “I don’t think Colin wanted to play last year and I don’t think he wants to play now. Has anybody ever heard him come out and say that he wants to play, that he’s actively tying to pursue a position somewhere?”

And, looking ahead to week 4, Bono speculated about possible scenarios for the 49ers anthem plans in Phoenix: “It will be interesting to see. If they all kneel, then I would say that we know Eric Reid is the leader because he was kneeling with Colin last year. If they all stand, then somebody else is leading them.”

Steve Bono Credits O-Line In Week 2, But “Receivers Are Just Getting Man-Handled”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we talk about the 49ers season  12-9 loss in Seattle. Praise for the defense and criticism of an offense that hasn’t scored a touchdown in the first two games of the season.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the 49ers offensive line play in Seattle leading to Carlos Hyde’s 124 rush yards: “I’m going to credit them because they played better for sure against a good Seattle defense, at least run blocking. Carlos has slimmed down, he just looks faster.”

Bono also assessed the situation at  wide receiver: “Some of those third downs the receivers are just getting man-handled by Seattle’s corners…Just not being big-statured guys. They try and throw that fade stop, back shoulder throw and they just seem to get man handled.”

Steve Bono On 49ers Week 1 Offensive Play Calling: “There Wasn’t The (Rush/Pass) Mix”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we talk about the 49ers season opening 23-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Complete analysis of what went wrong, including an early evaluation of new head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the 49ers play calling in the loss to the Panthers:

“(Carlos Hyde) had 5 yards a carry (45 yards on just 9 rush attempts). I’m not sure if Kyle (Shanahan) felt like he couldn’t run the ball anymore or that they had to throw the ball more to catch up. I felt like there wasn’t the mix that they had done so well with in the Minnesota game in the preseason, where there was lots of running the ball, lots of play action.”

Steve Bono on 49ers Firings: “I’m Glad They Did It” Players Had “Zero Accountability”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chatted with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. In our final podcast of the 2016 season we discuss the Niners 2-14 campaign that ended with GM Trent Baalke and Head Coach Chip Kelly getting fired.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

BONO

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the 49ers hitting the reset button by firing Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke:

“I don’t know at what point during the season Jed (York) makes that decision that we need to blow this up. I’m glad that they did. It was bad from the get-go…There was zero accountability (among players).  A veteran player told me that there were maybe a dozen guys focused and locked in every day. The rest of them were just along for the ride “

Bono also commented on Colin Kaepernick:

“He seemed like a good guy when I talked with him. But, he just never seemed to be into it emotionally. You’ve got to be pissed off at some point that you’re getting your ass handed to you and you’re losing games. I just didn’t see that fire…(Kaepernick winning the Len Eshmont award for courageous and inspirational play) made a lot of people sick, I’m one of them. In my mind (teammates) bought into his nonsense and they followed him. They voted for him. Hence the reason you had such a bad season.”

Bono Says Kaepernick Is “Done” With 49ers, Kelly Coached “Fractured” Team

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss the Niners 22-21 win over the Rams, plus the future for coach Chip Kelly and quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

BONO

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Colin Kaepernick’s future with the 49ers:

“He’s done…His only chance is for Chip Kelly to be here. I just don’t see it. I don’t think Kaep wants to be here.”

Bono also commented on Chip Kelly’s status:

“After that game is over on Sunday, nobody’s safe…The team is fractured. You have three guys kneeling and the other guys standing at attention…Did Chip go the opposite way of what he did in Philly where he was meddling and on guys all the time? Did he go the other way and kinda let it take care of itself, be more of a players’ coach? Seems like he did that. Is that the right way? I’m not convinced…There didn’t seem to be much finger pointing in the newspaper. Is that because most of the guys didn’t really care? Was there not enough passion that guys that really care were getting on guys that don’t care?…The next two or three weeks it could be serious bloodshed.”
