Sportscasters Joe Castellano and Ray Woodson go in-depth to talk about the Bay Area sports scene.
All new in 2024, former KNBR talk show host Ray Woodson and long-time sports announcer Joe Castellano are back to talk about Bay Area sports throughout the year and this is episode number two, reviewing Super Bowl 58 and assessing the state of the Warriors at the All-Star break.
Ray and Joe play a game of what ifs when reviewing Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas. A fumble, a muffed punt, and a blocked extra point were three key mistakes that the 49ers made as they lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, again. Should they have taken the ball first in overtime? How justified is the narrative surrounding Kyle Shanahan that he can’t win the big game?
The discussion moves to the hardcourt and why the Warriors are in much better shape before the NBA All-Star break than they were just a couple of weeks ago.
It’s all here on the second 2024 edition of TheSportsVirus Podcast.

During our 2020 season- finale podcast, former Niners QB Steve Bono analyzes the week 17 loss to the Seahawks and evaluates how the players performed in what resulted in an injury-riddled 6-10 season. Plus, he looks forward to what SF will do in the off-season, especially at the quarterback position.
BONO ON JIMMY G’S POSSIBLE RETURN: “I think that they restructure his deal, give a majority of it to him in a signing bonus and I’m sure Jimmy would be fine doing that because he’s making just as much money if not more…Yes, he’s been hurt, but when he’s playing he’s proven to be a winner.”
BONO ALSO CONTEMPLATES THE SITUATION IF JIMMY G ISN’T COMING BACK: “I know Kyle (Shanahan) has a history with Matt Ryan, but if it were me I would want my guy to be Carson Wentz. He’s younger, I think he’s a good player and he’s got more mobility than Matt.”

This week we discuss the loss to Washington and issues that Steve thinks are similar for all of the Niners QBs: “In the pocket there’s not a sense of timing or rhythm to it and that’s where I don’t think they’re coached that well because they all kind of do the same thing.”

Every week former 49ers QB Steve Bono analyzes the Niners game. This week we chat about the Monday Night loss to the Bills which exposed flaws in the SF defense and QB Nick Mullens. “Honestly I don’t know if he’s good enough to be the difference maker,” says Bono. “Kyle (Shanahan) likes having him in there, his teammates like having him in there because he gets them to the right play, he’s getting them out of trouble. Maybe that’s something that (CJ) Beathard doesn’t do as well, but God when they have to be in a throwing situation I would like to have seen Beathard slinging it around last night.”

Every week former 49ers QB Steve Bono analyzes the Niners game. This week we chat about the loss to the Saints in a game where San Francisco failed to get its running game going. Jerick McKinnon was not the answer: “He’s not that big of a person to be smashing it up there in-between the tackles. You would think the zone read runs would benefit him, but there must be an explosion that’s just not there unfortunately…I think we know now why he wasn’t playing much before…the running game is killing us.”

This week we chat about the Thursday night loss to the Packers and we discuss the quarterback situation going forward: “(During the Green Bay game) I thought to myself, if I’m Kyle (Shanahan) next week I’m going to play (CJ) Beathard and give him the opportunity of the whole game and see how we do…He has a stronger arm (than Mullens). “

Every week former 49ers QB Steve Bono analyzes the Niners game. This week we chat about the devastating loss in Seattle that included injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle that will possibly keep them out for the rest of the season. We discuss Jimmy G’s future and Steve gives his thoughts on the state of the Niners quarterbacks: “I honestly think that I’m not so sure how well coached they are. Is (49ers QB coach Shane Day) preparing them well enough read-wise and seeing blitzes and things like that? …They’re stuck on their back foot and there’s nothing behind the throw a lot of times.”
