Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we go over the 5 turnovers San Francisco had in its disappointing loss to the Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium.
Plus, our special guest this week is San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ann Killion. She examines the 49ers outlook and what they should do for a backup quarterback the rest of the season.
Killion talked about the depth and talent of the team: … “Yes, they lost (Jimmy) Garoppolo which is a huge blow. There’s no doubt. Not that they would have been contending for the playoffs really this year, but at least he would have gotten an entire year of playing in the system…I think what we’ve seen even before he got injured was that this team isn’t ready. There are holes all over the place. Yes, some of it right now is because of injuries, but also it’s because some of the players they are relying on are either injury-prone or old.”

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss injury risk vs. reward for QB CJ Beathard who took 8 QB hits in the loss to the Chargers on Sunday.
Bono talked about why quarterbacks are willing to take injury risks when it comes to a QB fighting for a first down: … “I’ve always said that we’re trained as quarterbacks, it’s always 3rd and 10 and you’ve got to get the first down. So, you’re going to do whatever it takes to get the first down, whether it’s running the ball, throwing the ball, throwing it with your left hand. That’s how we’re wired.”
49ers QB CJ Beathard will be back with us next week after the Arizona game. He’s going to be joining us on a regular basis this season.
Two weeks ago, CJ talked about being ready as Jimmy G’s backup: “…you have to prepare as if you are the guy because you’re a play away from being in there and getting all of the game reps…More than anything it’s watching film and staying in the film room. The quarterback position is more mental than anything else. The more film you get and watch on the defense, seeing what they do, when you get on the field it feels a lot better and more comfortable like you’ve seen it before.”

In our final Giants podcast of 2018, we look forward to 2019 with September call-ups Chris Shaw and Aramis Garcia.
It was a season of many injuries and much disappointment. A second straight losing season with no post season berth cost GM Bobby Evans his job. But, the future is bright for some of the young Giants. Shaw blasted 24 home runs for AAA Sacramento and Garcia has been producing in San Francisco while playing catcher and first base.
Shaw talked about what he wants his approach to be in 2019:
“When I put the ball in play I’m usually putting it in play pretty hard. If I can come out next year and cut down my strikeouts by 30 strikeouts on the year, that could be 50 extra points on the slugging percentage, that could be 5 more home runs. I think that big guys, we just have to put an emphasis on just putting the ball forward…That’s ultimately my goal.”
The Warriors have won 3 NBA championships in the last 4 years. Now they look for a 3-peat. Ray Woodson was out at media day in Oakland and helps us preview the 2018-19 season with comments from Steph, KD and Klay as well as newcomer DeMarcus Cousins. Plus, GM Bob Myers talks about a new approach for Golden State and Steve Kerr details his plan for the center position.

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss the consequences of Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending torn ACL injury and what can be anticipated from new starter CJ Beathard.
Bono talked about Jimmy G’s interception that was called back due to a Lions holding penalty: … “The goal is to come in and play and have it be as seamless as possible. Yes it’s CJ Beathard and not Jimmy Garoppolo, but CJ’s mind set needs to be, yeah I’m not the same person, I don’t have the exact same style, but how we move the ball and how we execute is exactly the same.”
49ers QB CJ Beathard will be back with us in a couple of weeks. He’s going to be joining us on a regular basis this season.
Last week, CJ talked about being ready as Jimmy G’s backup: “…you have to prepare as if you are the guy because you’re a play away from being in there and getting all of the game reps…More than anything it’s watching film and staying in the film room. Plus, with the announcement that Bobby Evans will not return as Giants General Manager, we hear from Chief Executive Officer Larry Baer and Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Brian Sabean.
Baer on what the Giants will be looking for from their new GM :
“Somebody who’s going to come in and 24/7 is going to immerse himself or herself in the baseball operation and is going to be fully accountable for the results and putting together the blueprint of the future, sort of the Next Gen for the Giants.”
