Steve Bono on 49ers Firings: “I’m Glad They Did It” Players Had “Zero Accountability”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chatted with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. In our final podcast of the 2016 season we discuss the Niners 2-14 campaign that ended with GM Trent Baalke and Head Coach Chip Kelly getting fired.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the 49ers hitting the reset button by firing Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke:

“I don’t know at what point during the season Jed (York) makes that decision that we need to blow this up. I’m glad that they did. It was bad from the get-go…There was zero accountability (among players).  A veteran player told me that there were maybe a dozen guys focused and locked in every day. The rest of them were just along for the ride “

Bono also commented on Colin Kaepernick:

“He seemed like a good guy when I talked with him. But, he just never seemed to be into it emotionally. You’ve got to be pissed off at some point that you’re getting your ass handed to you and you’re losing games. I just didn’t see that fire…(Kaepernick winning the Len Eshmont award for courageous and inspirational play) made a lot of people sick, I’m one of them. In my mind (teammates) bought into his nonsense and they followed him. They voted for him. Hence the reason you had such a bad season.”

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss the Niners 22-21 win over the Rams, plus the future for coach Chip Kelly and quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Colin Kaepernick’s future with the 49ers:

“He’s done…His only chance is for Chip Kelly to be here. I just don’t see it. I don’t think Kaep wants to be here.”

Bono also commented on Chip Kelly’s status:

“After that game is over on Sunday, nobody’s safe…The team is fractured. You have three guys kneeling and the other guys standing at attention…Did Chip go the opposite way of what he did in Philly where he was meddling and on guys all the time? Did he go the other way and kinda let it take care of itself, be more of a players’ coach? Seems like he did that. Is that the right way? I’m not convinced…There didn’t seem to be much finger pointing in the newspaper. Is that because most of the guys didn’t really care? Was there not enough passion that guys that really care were getting on guys that don’t care?…The next two or three weeks it could be serious bloodshed.”

Purdy Says 49ers/Kaerpernick “Have To Move On. I Just Don’t Like The Body Language He’s Had”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today Mark Purdy from the Bay Area News Group fills in for Steve and we discuss the big picture for the 49ers going forward.

Purdy has been with the San Jose Mercury News since 1984 and has covered more than 30 Super Bowls.

Purdy talked to The Sports Virus about whether or not the 49ers and Colin Kaepernick should part ways:

“I think they’ve got to move on and he’s got to move on. I just don’t like the body language he’s had here this past year and I’m not talking about kneeling down for the national anthem, that’s something totally separate. That’s his deal and that’s fine. I think he’s sincere about all of that stuff. But, if you look at the way he carries himself on the field during drives versus other guys like Derek Carr or Aaron Rodgers, you can tell they are the leaders out there. Colin just looks to me like a guy waiting for the next play to come in. He doesn’t ever yell at receivers for dropping the balls and I guess that’s being a good teammate, but you know what, maybe he should yell at the receivers for dropping the ball…I just don’t see him as a leader of the offensive unit. I think HE’S done with this team.”

Bono Pins Loss On Chip Kelly: “4th & 1 In Overtime & You Run The Ball Up The Middle? Seriously?”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss the Niners 12th straight loss, 23-17, to the Jets which dropped San Francisco to 1-12 on the season.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

BONO

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the 49ers 4th down play in overtime:

“They keep finding a way to lose as opposed to finding a way to win…I’ve got to put it on Chip (Kelly). 4th and 1 in overtime and you run the ball up the middle? Seriously? Put (Colin Kaepernick) out in space with the ball in his hand with a run/pass option. I’m thinking to myself, is Chip lacking that much confidence in Kaep that he doesn’t put the ball in his hand? If you don’t have confidence in Kaep then play Blaine (Gabbert). I agreed with going for it but give me at least two options.”

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Colin Kaepernick’s future with the 49ers after news surfaced that he bought a condo in Manhattan:

“…I think he’s wanted to be there (in New York) for the last year. He talked about it at the end of last season, being with his girlfriend. I would think he’s gone, honestly. I would think for sure he’s gone if Chip’s gone. That all remains to be seen, but I honestly think Kaep checked out a year ago.”

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Colin Kaepernick:

“…He just seems to have some more rapport with the receivers and tight ends and throwing the ball a little bit more in rhythm. He definitely played better.  Threw the ball better, ran the ball stepping out of the pocket making some big plays. The receivers and tight ends still need to make a few more catches.”

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Jeremy Kerley:

“…He just gets manhandled.  He goes to reach for the ball and he gets out-bodied by the defender also going for the ball, just a bigger person. He’s pretty good, but there are those instances where he is not a big body and gets controlled.”

Steve Bono: Deflategate Could Have Been Avoided If Brady Said “My Guys Take Care Of Me”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

As we previewed this Sunday’s game at Levi’s Stadium against the Patriots, Bono talked about Tom Brady:

“…He can make an average receiver look good. He can make a good receiver look great. He’s a special one, that’s for sure, and he’ll be slinging it all over the place.”

Bono also talked to The Sports Virus about Brady’s role in Deflategate:

“…If he would have just said, ‘my guys take care of me, people have been messing with the balls for a hundred years and this is how I like ’em so my guys take care of me,’ it would have been done. Nothing else would have happened…It was known around the league that he had been doing it. But, everybody messes with (the balls).”

49ers Safety Eric Reid: “It’s Been On Us As Players Not Executing The Calls…I Love The Scheme”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Today we have a special on-site podcast with 49ers starting safety Eric Reid at The Brixton Restaurant in San Francisco. We  discuss the thebrixtonNiners loss in Arizona, the upcoming game against the Patriots and Eric’s decision to kneel with Colin Kaepernick during the national anthem throughout the season.

Reid is in his 4th season in the NFL after being drafted in the first round of the 2013 draft by San Francisco out of LSU. He was elected to play in the 2014 Pro Bowl.

reid

Reid talked to The Sports Virus about the Niners defensive woes this season:

“…It’s been on us as players not executing the calls which has led to the big plays and the yards. It has nothing to do with the scheme. I personally love the scheme. We just have breakdowns every now and then which leads to those big plays. I think we showed on Sunday that if we execute the play that’s called then we can minimize the big plays and we put ourselves in a better position to win games.”

Patton Big Game In Loss To N.O. Bono Says Kaep “Would Much Rather Be Throwing On The Run”

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss the Niners 7th straight loss, 41-23  to the Saints which dropped San Francisco to 1-7 on the season.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

BONO

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about Colin Kaepernick’s inconsistency:

“…He would much rather be throwing on the run. He doesn’t have the rhythm in his drop or into his throwing motion. He seems like he rushes them… He doesn’t seem to be comfortable in there (the pocket). I don’t think he sees things terrifically so he wants to get the ball out of his hand, whereas when he’s on the run it’s one or two guys and he can focus in on them and make an accurate throw.”
