49ERS EXTRA: Steve Bono On Week 4 Loss In LA, CJ Beathard Staying Safe

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SF 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss injury risk vs. reward for QB CJ Beathard who took 8 QB hits in the loss to the Chargers on Sunday.

Bono talked about why quarterbacks are willing to take injury risks when it comes to a QB fighting for a first down: … “I’ve always said that we’re trained as quarterbacks, it’s always 3rd and 10 and you’ve got to get the first down. So, you’re going to do whatever it takes to get the first down, whether it’s running the ball, throwing the ball, throwing it with your left hand. That’s how we’re wired.”

49ers QB CJ Beathard will be back with us next week after the Arizona game. He’s going to be joining us on a regular basis this season.

Two weeks ago, CJ talked about being ready as Jimmy G’s backup: “…you have to prepare as if you are the guy because you’re a play away from being in there and getting all of the game reps…More than anything it’s watching film and staying in the film room. The quarterback position is more mental than anything else. The more film you get and watch on the defense, seeing what they do, when you get on the field it feels a lot better and more comfortable like you’ve seen it before.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN ’18 FINALE: The Future Is Now For Chris Shaw And Aramis Garcia

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated twice a week on TheSportsVirus.com!

In our final Giants podcast of 2018, we look forward to 2019 with September call-ups Chris Shaw and Aramis Garcia.

It was a season of many injuries and much disappointment. A second straight losing season with no post season berth cost GM Bobby Evans his job. But, the future is bright for some of the young Giants. Shaw blasted 24 home runs for AAA Sacramento and Garcia has been producing in San Francisco while playing catcher and first base.

Shaw talked about what he wants his approach to be in 2019:

“When I put the ball in play I’m usually putting it in play pretty hard. If I can come out next year and cut down my strikeouts by 30 strikeouts on the year, that could be 50 extra points on the slugging percentage, that could be 5 more home runs. I think that big guys, we just have to put an emphasis on just putting the ball forward…That’s ultimately my goal.”

49ERS EXTRA: Steve Bono On What CJ Beathard Needs To Do Replacing Jimmy G

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SF 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we discuss the consequences of Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending torn ACL injury and what can be anticipated from new starter CJ Beathard.

Bono talked about Jimmy G’s interception that was called back due to a Lions holding penalty: … “The goal is to come in and play and have it be as seamless as possible. Yes it’s CJ Beathard and not Jimmy Garoppolo, but CJ’s mind set needs to be, yeah I’m not the same person, I don’t have the exact same style, but how we move the ball and how we execute is exactly the same.”

49ers QB CJ Beathard will be back with us in a couple of weeks. He’s going to be joining us on a regular basis this season.

Last week, CJ talked about being ready as Jimmy G’s backup: “…you have to prepare as if you are the guy because you’re a play away from being in there and getting all of the game reps…More than anything it’s watching film and staying in the film room. The quarterback position is more mental than anything else. INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Larry Krueger Part 2, What MLB Should Change / Not Change

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated twice a week on TheSportsVirus.com!

Larry Krueger from KNBR joins us to talk about what changes should and should not occur in Major League Baseball in  part 2 of our conversation.

Krueger on the possibility of mechanical umpires :

“The game is played by people and it should be officiated by people and it’s watched by people. If you start doing it any other way it loses an awful lot of spontaneity maybe. To me, maybe I’m old school, but I think a sport that goes back to 1870 to make overwhelming, sweeping changes to a sport that’s that old is kind of disrespecting the sport…It was a great, great sport and it doesn’t need massive alterations.”

49ERS EXTRA: CJ Beathard & Steve Bono On Week 2 Niners Win Over Lions

49ers Extra Logo nostripe sm

Welcome to the SF 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

49ers QB CJ Beathard is making his 49ers Extra debut today as we chat about the week two SF win over the Lions. He’ll join us on a regular basis this season.

CJ talked about being ready as Jimmy G’s backup: “…you have to prepare as if you are the guy because you’re a play away from being in there and getting all of the game reps…More than anything it’s watching film and staying in the film room. The quarterback position is more mental than anything else. The more film you get and watch on the defense, seeing what they do, when you get on the field it feels a lot better and more comfortable like you’ve seen it before.”

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chat with former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today we analyze the Lions win, which included some anxious moments in the 4th quarter when Detroit nearly came all the way back from a 17-point deficit.

Bono talked about Jimmy G’s interception that was called back due to a Lions holding penalty: …”Unfortunately, I’ve thrown that one too many times that go the other way. Everybody has. Jimmy G was going to throw it and he kind of gets bumped a little bit on his left side. Now, I’m not defending him throwing it because he shouldn’t have thrown it, but he doesn’t get a whole lot on it. He gets bumped a little bit on it and it looks like he can’t follow through on it.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: KNBR’s Larry Krueger ’19 Success “Predicated On Who Plays OF”

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated twice a week on TheSportsVirus.com!

Larry Krueger from KNBR joins us to talk about what the Giants should do this off season in part 1 of a 2-part conversation.

For Krueger, the solution is pretty simple:

“If they came back next year with the same rotation, the same bullpen and the same infield, I think most people would be pleased with that. Their success or failure in 2019 is going to be predicated on who comes back and plays that outfield…Can you count on (Steven) Duggar? He’s a very good defensive player, but I think if he’s in your lineup, you’re hitting him 8th. He’s not a foundation piece outfielder at this point until he proves he’s a Major League hitter.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Bob Nightengale From USA Today Sizes Up Giants Future

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated twice a week on TheSportsVirus.com!

As the Major League Baseball regular season winds down, Joe Castellano gives his thoughts on some areas of concern in the current game. Mechanical umpires? More or less replay? Limit defensive shifts?

Then Bob Nightengale from USA Today joins us to take a peek into the Giants future. Will it include Madison Bumgarner?:

“I think he’s staying, I really do. Let’s be honest, he doesn’t have same the trade value as he once did. He’s not that same guy. He’s still a very good pitcher, but not a bona fide ace type guy that he was…I think they hang onto him, then see where they are next July at the trade deadline.”

INSIDE CHINA BASIN: Red Sox Scout Gary Hughes Says Panda Is “Still A Talented Guy”

Welcome to the INSIDE CHINA BASIN Baseball Podcast

Updated twice a week on TheSportsVirus.com!

After the Giants losing streak reached 11 games, Joe Castellano gave his thoughts on what the ball club should do to improve in 2019. Our special guest is Boston Red Sox scout Gary Hughes, who is a Bay Area native. Here’s what he told The Sports Virus on Inside China Basin about Pablo Sandoval:

“He’s still a talented guy and it didn’t work. To our credit we ate the whole (contract) and that was a big meal. That’s why we are where we are now. We didn’t sit and hold onto that contract and keep hoping something would happen. We just went out and made something else happen.
