Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday during the NFL season we chatted with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. In our final podcast of the 2016 season we discuss the Niners 2-14 campaign that ended with GM Trent Baalke and Head Coach Chip Kelly getting fired.

Bono spent 14 seasons in the NFL. He had a 5-1 record in his 6 Niners starts and finished his career 28-14 overall.

Bono talked to The Sports Virus about the 49ers hitting the reset button by firing Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke:

“I don’t know at what point during the season Jed (York) makes that decision that we need to blow this up. I’m glad that they did. It was bad from the get-go…There was zero accountability (among players).  A veteran player told me that there were maybe a dozen guys focused and locked in every day. The rest of them were just along for the ride “

Bono also commented on Colin Kaepernick:

“He seemed like a good guy when I talked with him. But, he just never seemed to be into it emotionally. You’ve got to be pissed off at some point that you’re getting your ass handed to you and you’re losing games. I just didn’t see that fire…(Kaepernick winning the Len Eshmont award for courageous and inspirational play) made a lot of people sick, I’m one of them. In my mind (teammates) bought into his nonsense and they followed him. They voted for him. Hence the reason you had such a bad season.”

Purdy Says 49ers/Kaerpernick “Have To Move On. I Just Don’t Like The Body Language He’s Had”

Welcome to the SAN FRANCISCO 49ers EXTRA podcast on TheSportsVirus.com!

Every Tuesday we chat with Former 49ers QB Steve Bono. Today Mark Purdy from the Bay Area News Group fills in for Steve and we discuss the big picture for the 49ers going forward.

Purdy has been with the San Jose Mercury News since 1984 and has covered more than 30 Super Bowls.

Purdy talked to The Sports Virus about whether or not the 49ers and Colin Kaepernick should part ways:

“I think they’ve got to move on and he’s got to move on. I just don’t like the body language he’s had here this past year and I’m not talking about kneeling down for the national anthem, that’s something totally separate. That’s his deal and that’s fine. I think he’s sincere about all of that stuff. But, if you look at the way he carries himself on the field during drives versus other guys like Derek Carr or Aaron Rodgers, you can tell they are the leaders out there. Colin just looks to me like a guy waiting for the next play to come in. He doesn’t ever yell at receivers for dropping the balls and I guess that’s being a good teammate, but you know what, maybe he should yell at the receivers for dropping the ball…I just don’t see him as a leader of the offensive unit. I think HE’S done with this team.”
